When the death knell sounded for Death From Above 1979, we didn't just lose the greatest dance-punk band in Canada (and arguably the world), we gained a pair of awesome splinter projects! Jesse F. Keeler's MSTRKRFT project may have been the most prominent, but his former DFA1979 band mate Sebastien Grainger is set to return with his own project: Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains, and give Keeler a definite run for his money.Grainger's self-titled album is wide screen, less-aggressive progression into soaring rock anthems with big choruses, fat chords, and a whole lot of love to give. This is no DFA1979 re-tread. Grainger is pushing himself into some new and uncharted territory: the land of singer-sogwriterdom. He borrows liberally from classic rock and modern indie pop to a create a pretty heady brew of soulful rock. Even better than what you'll hear on the album is the excellent cover of Daniel Lanois's "The Maker" streaming on his Myspace page. Let's hope it makes it to record sometime soon. In the meantime, Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains will be out October 21st on Saddle Creek in the U.S. and Outside Music in Canada.
