Montreal's Land Of Talk have been living up to their name; it seems every time I have or hear a conversation about music recently, their name comes up. There's much anticipation for their soon-to-be-released album, Some Are Lakes, the follow-up to their widely applauded 2006 release, Applause Cheer Boo Hiss.
Frontwoman Elizabeth Powell often gets compared to Polly Jean Harvey, albeit a pared-down, less angry/bitter version of the UK indie maven. But I found this little tidbit on the band's Facebook page that I think is the best way to encapsulate their sound and attitude: "Land of Talk is a female-fronted guitar rock juggernaut . They have been described as a destructive Stevie Nicks/Blonde Redhead mutant, Will Oldham meets Sonic Youth, and as a PJ Harvey-meets-Crazy Horse type creature. Land of Talk makes their music in a van down by the river." Alright then?
