Double bass, accordion, cello and Amy-Millan-like vocals make Wendy McNeill a welcome reprieve from the standard indie-pop in my inbox. Hailing from the Canadian prairies, McNeill's songs sound like cabaret standards from a parallel universe. They often take unexpected turns lyrically, and impress the listener with inventive arrangements. Her new album, A Dreamer's Guide to Hardcore Living creates a whole new genre: polka-punk rock. It's not Ramones/Sex Pistols punk, but the DIY punk that comes from following artistic vision in the face of pop culture.
Sweet squeeze box, indeed.
A Dreamer's Guide to Hardcore Living is out next Tuesday on Six Shooter Records.
