2 atoms in a molecule

Back in July I brought you word of quirky indie-folk band Noah & The Whale and their self-proclaimed 'song of the summer', "Five Years Time". Last week the band's debut album, Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down, made it's grand entrance, living up to the promise of it's preceding single. Charlie Fink, the band's lyricist and singer, has a singing voice reminiscent of Andrew Bird, except that Fink tends to favour the lower registers of his voice. His lyrics are somewhat dole and melancholy, and stand in stark contrast to the pop leanings of their musical accompaniment. It could all get very repetitive very quickly if it wasn't for the addition of Laura Marling's beautiful backing vocals offering a soft, comforting haze on the proceedings.

Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down doesn't reveal all its charms in just one listen. Lie all the best pop, it catches your attention quickly and effortlessly, but really begins to impress the more you listen to it.
