Perfect games

Sometimes blogging is a chore. There are plenty of times when I just don't have anything nice to say about some of the music sent to me to review, and for someone who spends a great deal of time listening to and reading about music, burning out can be easily accomplished and often happens.

The only good thing about burning out is that it inevitably leads to a renewed sense of wonder and awe with music when that next great song comes tumbling your way. And so it goes with The Broken West, whose debut album I Can't Go On I'll Go On came my way at the start of 2007 when the headiness of compiling the best of 2006 gave way to the doldrums of a slow music release period of January and February 2007. Their first single "Down In The Valley" was just the adrenalin shot my iPod needed.

The Broken West have done it to me again with news of their next album, Now Or Heaven, coming out in September on Merge. They've released a sweet little teaser of a song in "Perfect Games" which builds on the power pop/California dreaming sound of the first album and packages it in a tidy little three minute song.

My appetite is whetted for this album, and my interest in new music is revived, thanks again to The Broken West.
