Patience is a virtue and good timing is a gift from the Gods, and when you have both working in your favour, you can count yourself lucky. having said all that, Tokyo Police Club didn't have to rely on luck alone to get where they are, their talent and songs played just as important a role. From the start of their career, they didn't let the buzz get the better of them. Where others may have jumped to release lackluster records just for the sake of capitalizing on hype, Tokyo Police Club made sure things were done right the first time round. The Toronto band started in 2005, and has already made the rounds of the biggest names in music festivals: Coachella? Lollapalooza? Reading? Glastonbury? Check, check, check, and check.
The band initially signed to Paper Bag Records to release their debut EP, A Lesson In Crime, and the follow-up Smith EP in 2006 and 2007 respectively. In July 2007, they inked a deal with Saddle Creek, home to Bright Eyes, to release their debut full length, Elephant Shell. That album hit stores next Tuesday, but I thought a sample ahead of time was in order.
"Tessellate" is classic Tokyo Police Club: quick, witty, sharp, and crackling with raw energy. Early critics said that their songs were over too quick and too full of ideas to ever be realized. I think the TPC have the formula just right: leave them wanting more of what you're giving them, and they'll always come back for more. let me know if you think I'm right.
