From Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, comes another kind of broken social scene: the Dependent Music collective. Dependent Music is owned and operated by the artists involved on it's roster, like 2008 Juno Award winners Wintersleep (New Group of the Year).Formed around 2001, Wintersleep has released two albums via Dependent, and earlier this year released their third, Welcome To The Night Sky, on Labwork. ...Night Sky was produced by Tony Doogan, whose made his name as being producer for Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai. With such illustrious connections, I find it hard to classify Wintersleep's sound: it's definitely rock, but there's a streak of pop sensibility buried deep in the thumping rhythm section, and a soulful croon in vocalist Paul Murphy's singing. The indie rock spirit of their Western countrymen is in the mix, too, but what I love most is the atmospheric feel of album opener "Drunk On Aluminum," as it reminds me of early Catherine Wheel.
Wintersleep will be performing at this year's Pemberton Festival, in Pemberton B.C. alongside The Flaming Lips, Black Mountain, Interpol, and, ...er, Tom Petty. The festival runs from July 25-27, so if you're in the area take note.
