Against the grain

If there's only one new album you buy today, make sure it's Bring Me Your Love, the second full-length album from St. Catharines, Ontario's City And Colour.

City And Colour is the moniker Dallas Green (rhythm guitar and vocals for the post-hardcore outfit Alexisonfire) uses to record under in lieu of his own name (Dallas=City, Green=Colour, get it?). For his second CAC album, Green continues to create a quiet and intimate set of songs that's in stark contrast to his other band's thundering, epic bombast. Bring Me Your Love is layered with all the ambient noises and ambiance of the recording process; it opens with the sounds of footsteps on floorboards, Green settling into his comfy leather chair as he strums the opening chords of "Forgive Me." The album was recorded at Catherine North Studio, in Hamilton, Ontario--a converted church. The setting is appropriate, given the confessional tone of Green's music and the reverence paid to the vintage instruments and live-off-the-floor recordings. Guests on the album include Gord Downie of the tragically Hip and members of Green's label mates, Attack In Black.

Bring Me Your Love is a gorgeous collection of music by one of the best young songwriters in Canada. Who couldn't use a little more love in their record collection?
