Am I a bad Canadian for having just become aware of how much love (critical and fanatical alike) is showered on Winnipeg's The Weakerthans? Surely, I can be excused for having my head so far up my maple leaf-wiped ass that for almost a decade I seemed to have forgotten that over a third of the country lies west of Thunder Bay, and that great Canadian music is not isolated to Toronto, Montreal or Halifax.
The Weakerthans have recently released a superb new album, Reunion Tour, that takes the band beyond the punk/folk hybrid they've become known for, branching into further studio experimentation according to album producer Ian Blurton.
The band are in Regina, Saskatchewan tonight, playing at The Districkt, and hop over to Saskatoon tomorrow to play Louis'. If you're priare-bound, check them out. For we Ontarians, The Weakerthans hit Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto (for two nights) and London in November, before returning to the 'Peg for a homecoming show at the Burton Cummings Theatre on December 22.
The Weakerthans "Sun in an Empty Room"
The Weakerthans "Night Windows"
