Stars & The National

We're just coming off the first long weekend of the year in Canada, and what better way to ring in the summer record release season than with a new disc from Stars? Too bad we'll have to wait until the fall for that album, but for now, Torq and the band have called in a few favours and lent out each of the tracks on their highly praised album Set Yourself On Fire for a re-imagining/ remixing/reworking by some of their musical compadres. The results can be found on Do You Trust Your Friends? which hits the shops today. Jason Collett's reworking (it's basically his cover version) of "Reunion" is one of the finest things here.

Also in stores today is the brilliant new album from Brooklyn's The National, Boxer. I talked to Alex over at Blog Fresh Radio about Boxer's first track, "Fake Empire" a few weeks back--check out the interview here if you missed it. The National get criticized for being mistaken as another artist, which is just some sort of thinly veiled jab at their lack of original sound. I disagree with that theory after having heard Boxer; there is a charm, a mysterious quality surrounding this album that really raises the bar for guitar-driven American indie bands. Between this album and their last (Alligator), The National have developed their own sound, and it's really very good. Maybe not a must-have album, but definitely a must-listen. Borrow your col hipster friend's copy as soon as you can.
