4 for the weekend, vol.9

This week, it's all about the Hype Machine:

Spoon--bearing a name so similar to my favourite 80s Canadian synth-pop band that I often have to do a double take when I see it in print--are all set to release their latest (greatest), Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. The songs are impeccable, and make huge strides from 2005's Gimme Fiction. "The Ghost Of You Lingers" has been making the 'net rounds, and rightly so. It's a bold statement for a first single, and quite possibly the band's most inspired song ever.

1990s have a classic sounding barroom stomp that shames Primal Scream's pseudo-retro pap. Two of them were once in a band with two of Franz Ferdinand. You can tell, too; both bands feature a shoulder-shrugging, life's-not-worth-bitching-over attitude that makes you thristy for some fun. They also share a killer sense of style with the 'Ferdinand boys--check out the best band logo of the year (sadly not pictured on the album sleeve, but click to the official site for it).

Interpol may get cussed out for hopping to a major label for their third, Our Love To Admire, but give the band a break--it's not their fault they're buzzed and hyped to the nth degree. What is their fault (or rather their strength) is that they are the only true deservers of the 'next Joy Division' label being bandied about. And even as I write this, that label seems as dated as and uninspired as a Pearl Jam record, for Interpol have long since gone beyond being compared to those that have come before. They are now the yardstick with which to measure others.

Bishop Allen were my band of 2006 for releasing 12 EPs from January to December, where the bulk of songs that are on this year's Bishop Allen And The Broken String first got an airing. Quick to add to their growing canon, the band have leaked a new track as a sneak peak of the album. I'm looking forward to hearing if they do any major reworking of my favourite EP tracks (especially "The Monitor"), and am pumped about the new material.
