4 for the weekend, vol.4

Would you trust your friends to muck about with your creation? Stars did, and the results will be available to the public shortly when they release Would You Trust Your Friends?--a track-by-track reworking of their 2005 album Set Yourself On Fire. Faithful and consistent readers will know that I've already posted some tracks from this before (ahem) and that I hold Stars in the highest regard. Having said that, some of the reworkings are hit and miss and in the coming weeks I'll talk more about them. For now, enjoy Young Galaxy's take on "Calendar Girl".

Bonde Do Role's "Solta O Frango" is a slice of Brazilian funk/punk fun that is over before it really begins. I've no idea what they're on about but it doesn't sound too serious, which is just as well because with its funky cartoonish beat you really can't take this too seriously. The band is signed to Domino and has just released Bonde Du Role With Lasers a twelve track carnival of calypso inspired dance floor fillers. North American dates and are heading to the UK to launch another assault.

The Shaky Hands first came to my attention via I Guess I'm Floating. a few months back, and slowly but surely these Portland boys have been creeping into my consciousness. With Nick Delffs's lead vocals sounding like a less overwrought Dave Lowry (Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven), they create a full bodied folk/pop sound with a minimal amount of fuss and waste. "Summer's Life" is an efficient and catchy number that will catch you off guard and make you fall in love with it if you're not careful. I'm all for the harmonica solo, too. Their self-titled album just came out this week, too.

The Swedes are everywhere, and good for them. The world needs more Loney, Dear, Peter Bjorn and John and now we can add The Honeydrips to that list. The band is essentially Mikael Carlsson (go figure another one-man Swedish band!) and he is crafting some delicious pop confections. "(Lack Of) Love Will Tear Us Apart" manages to sound like classic pop of the Sixties, early Nineties hip-hop-infused dance music, and contemporary twee-pop (notice how pop is the connecting factor?). Here Comes The Future is released on Sincerely, Yours and is well worth checking out.
