4 for my B-Earthday (and the weekend vol.5, too!)

Happy Earth Day to you, and Happy Birthday to me (I like to call it my B-Earth Day). In honour of this special day, I've decided to offer up four special tracks, all with a similar theme; I hope you like.

I got an early Birthday gift this week when Release The Stars, Rufus Wainwright's new album magically landed on my doorstep. It's fantastic. I can't wait until you all get to hear it. It's a cohesive album that you can listen to from beginning to end, something I don't think he's really achieved since Poses. To that end, I thought I'd post my favourite track from Poses, which happens to be the title track, in anticipation of the new album's release on May 15, and my going to see Rufus live in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall on June 12, 2007. I really wish I could post some of the new tracks for you, but alas, the time isn't right for that just yet.

Early readers of this blog will recall my falling head over heels for The Society Islands and their album Kiss & Tell. One of my favourite posts is the interview I did with Society Islands's main man, Boris Rogowski. An interesting fact I just discovered is that not only do Boris and I share the same great taste in music, but we practically share a birthday (his is April 21st!). So shoot Boris an email and wish him a happy belated one, and download one of the coolest songs in the world ever, "The Mill"

Since I'm in the birthday and Earth Day frame of mind, I thought I'd go back a few years to my 17th birthday (April 22, 1990 to be exact) when major earth day celebrations were planned as the world began to become ever more globally conscious. That birthday was also on a Sunday, and the previous night's musical guest on Saturday Night Live was none other than The B-52's, my musical obsession at the time. Never ones to shy away from environmental causes, the band played up the Earth Day angle with a great version of "Channel Z" from their album Cosmic Thing. Thanks to the magic of YouTube, I can bring you that performance!

Plus, I can bring you one of my favourite tracks of said album, "Cosmic Thing". I hear there's a new B-52's album in the works for later this year...

And lastly, it's also a little known fact that April 22, 1973, the day I was born, was also Easter Sunday. The 22nd is the latest possible date that Easter can fall on, and since that day, it's only ever coincided with my birthday once (my 11th). Alas, there's no song out there called, "I Was Born On Easter Sunday" (not any that weren't religious, that is), so for now, "I Was Born On Christmas Day" from Saint Etienne, another perennial favourite of mine, will have to do.

So let's recap shall we, because I think it's worth noting that this post was all about:
-Earth Day (past and present)
-my Birthday (past and present)
-my favourite artists of all time
-the birthday of one of my favourite artists of all time
-title tracks of albums from my favourite artists
-and is the next in a regular series of posts with 4 tracks in them

How's that for building a theme?
