The Russian Futurists are not Russian, but you could make a strong argument about them being futurists. Take as evidence the 2005 album, Our Thickness, which sounds more fresh and new a few years on than it did when it first was released. I admit that I have been negligent about the album as a whole; I only ever really listened to "Paul Simon" the album's opening track and ignored the rest, but lately I've revisited it and found a lot to like. Matthew Hart (who is The Russian Futurists) is an excellent cut-and-paste master mixing found sounds and bedroom symphonies to create an utterly unique sounding record. From the Canada geese honking through the opening of "Our Pen's Out of Ink" to the electronic splendor of "2 Dots on a Map", you'll scratch your head wondering how one person could conjure this all up on his own.If this album has eluded your ears these last two years, do yourself a favour and check it out.
