Chris Cohen (he of Deerhoof and Natural Dreamers) has a voice that bears a striking resemblance to that of Belle & Sebastian's Stevie Jackson, and the soft-shoe-dream-pop sound of his latest project, The Curtains, would fit nicely on any indie kid's latest hipster mixed playlist. Calamity, their 4th album, is pretty much completely produced and performed by Cohen. Recorded without a band and with no label, it's the sound of an artist without any restrictions except for his own imagination and willingness to give the songs what they need. It's bubble gum pop that threatens to stick in your throat when you swallow it, but it tastes so good you just can't help but eat it up. [MP3] "Go Lucky" comes highly recommended.
