It might be a useless and futile attempt to make your way into the world of music blogging at this point in time (July 2006) but being late on the bandwagon hasn't stopped people in the past, and nor is it really a bad thing. Think of what our world would have been like without second-rate grunge bands... without third-tier Britpop... without re-hashed hardcore... without O-Town. Through the very act of existing, these artists have made those that came before them seem that much more original, that much more precious, and that much more... more.
So maybe we shouldn't look on this new blog not as a bandwagon-jumping opportunity by some guy in his little house in Canada with nothing better to do; instead, let's look at it as a vessel for making other music blogs (to which you may link at right) seem that much more special, that much more unique, that much more... more. Whattayasay?
OK, let's cut the crap and get to some music. After all, what would a new music blog be without music? I figured as an introduction, I'd post something that gives you a taste of what is to come from QBIM:
:MP3 Cinerama ~ "Quick, Before It Melts (extended version)": The track from whence the name of the blog comes (interestingly enough, the song borrows it's name from the 1964 movie). Though both fall under the tutelage of David Gedge, there's something quite different from Cinerama's work than that of The Wedding present. It really boils down to Cinerama=smart and sexy, Wedding Present=smart and geeky. No matter, I think both bands are horribly undervalued, and Gedge is god. [buy here]
:MP3 The Dears ~ "You and I are a Gang of Losers": I'm Canadian, there needs to be a Canadian band on this first post, and though I'm a devotee of Stars, The Dears get to be the first Canuks based on the fact that their upcoming Gang Of Losers album is going to be one of, if not the best Canadian albums of the year. I was reading an interview with Murray Lightburn in the latest issue of Under The Radar and he commented extensively on the fact that Americans just don't seem to have a neat little box to put him in, and therefore seem to have a hard time opening up and accepting the music. Compared to previous efforts, this is probably the most accessible The Dears have been, but there's still that undeniably Canadian-ness to it that I think only we Canadians can truly feel; being the outsider amongst a group of people that are outwardly exactly the same as you. Does that make sense? [buy here]
:MP3 The Bicycles ~ "Gotta Get Out": Another Canadian band, in honour of their mention in today's National Post, which said of the band's debut album The Good, the Bad & the Cuddly: "With a total of 17 tracks clocking in at less than 40 minutes, you can listen to the whole album before work and leave home with a smile on your face." :MP3 Bishop Allen ~ "The Monitor": Hands down the best thing I've heard all year. I love this song. [buy here]
Your comments, suggestions, criticisms, contributions and anything else you'd like to say to me are all greatly welcome. I hope this is the start of something good. I hope it's nice where you are--go out and enjoy the day. I am.
